Marine Corps flight name tags

Marine aviators wear Navy wings, and the Marine Corps uniform order spells out the tag: black leather, gold lettering, three lines.

What the uniform manuals say, and what people wear

The Marine Corps uniform order (MCO 1020.34H, vol. 2) lists black leather name tags with the flight suit (para 7006.2) and describes the tag in para 7006.5: 2 x 4 inches, black leather or synthetic leather with hook-and-loop backing, embossed in gold for every grade. Line 1 is the aviation breast insignia (the Marine Corps emblem if not rated), line 2 the initials and last name, line 3 the grade and USMC or USMCR. The four-box layout most Marines wear is those same two lines split left and right, usually in a tall condensed block letter.

Marine pilots and NFOs earn the same gold Naval Aviator and Naval Flight Officer wings as the Navy, so those are the wings we offer.

Layouts

Four boxes is by far the most common Marine layout. Senior officers sometimes use the full name on top with rank left and USMC right.

Colors

The order calls for gold on black, so the builder starts there. Silver and brown are in the builder for gifts and display pieces; for a tag worn on the uniform, pick gold on black.

Wings

Naval Aviator wings for pilots and Naval Flight Officer wings for NFOs. The wing art is drawn from the official insignia and engraved at the same size on every tag, about two-thirds of the tag width, like the tags we measured.

Questions

Do Marines use Navy wings on their name tags?

Yes. Marine pilots and NFOs earn the Naval Aviator and Naval Flight Officer insignia, the same gold wings the Navy wears.

Why are Marine tags in condensed letters?

Tradition rather than a rule. Tall, narrow letters fit a long last name in the right-hand box. Pick Bold block or Regular if you prefer.
